HEAVENS LIGHT UP FOR SHOOTING-STAR SPECTACULAR

ONE of the most spectacular meteor showers reaches its peak tonight and excited astronomers are planning to host the first worldwide shooting-star party on the internet.

Wherever skies are clear they hope to post images of the meteors – expected to occur up to 80 times an hour – on the Twitter site.

The Perseid meteor shower has been occurring since late last month, but is expected to be most spectacular tonight and tomorrow.

Even the National Trust has published an online guide to the best places to watch the show – including near Stonehenge, Mam Tor in Derbyshire and Friar’s Crag near Keswick in Cumbria. All are more or less free from the light pollution which can make star spotting difficult in towns and cities.

The shooting stars are the remnants of the tail of the comet Swift-Tuttle, which last passed near the Earth 17 years ago. The streaks across the night sky are the result of tiny particles burning up as they enter the Earth’s atmosphere at high speed. The shower gets its name because it is believed to originate from the Perseus constellation.

Richard Fleet, president of Newbury Astronomical Society, said: “The Perseids can be spectacular and are one of the highlights of the astronomical calendar.”

I always get the creeps with these sort of things reminds me of "Day of the Triffids"

I hear they are remaking the film.
