'culture' at NHS of sending pornographic emails

Post by falkor » Tue Aug 25, 2009 9:28 am

A leading biomedical scientist has claimed that he emailed pornography to colleagues to "fit in" with a "culture" at the NHS of sending inappropriate messages.

Roger Mattock, a senior blood transfusion specialist, bombarded fellow staff with dozens of rude emails, including pornographic images and one entitled "very racist jokes", the Health Professions Council heard.

But the 54-year-old was caught out when a pornographic PowerPoint presentation infected his computer with a virus and he called the trust's IT team to help.

They discovered the images and emails on his computer, and a search of his office and locker also uncovered a bag filled with pornographic magazines, a blue movie and a print out of a naked woman in his desk drawer.

The father-of-three resigned from his job at Harrogate and District Foundation NHS Trust in North Yorkshire in October.

Mr Mattock, who has 35 years' experience, admits sending and receiving 89 inappropriate emails over six years, but told a HPC hearing in London on Monday that such behaviour was rife in the NHS.

He was found guilty of misconduct after an HPC panel deliberated for three hours but escaped with a caution.

Martin Ryder, HPC panel chair, said: "The scientist's misconduct relates to the receipt, forwarding and retention of inappropriate material of a racist and sexist nature. The public is entitled to expect the highest standard of behaviour from a registered health professional, especially one of Mr Mattock's experience.

"The panel has therefore concluded that his fitness to practise is impaired."

His actions were 'deliberate' and he breached the HPC code of ethics, the panel ruled.

Giving Mr Mattock a caution that will remain on his record for five years, Mr Ryder added: "The panel is satisfied that a caution order would be a proportionate and appropriate sanction and is in the public interest.

"The panel has taken into account the assurances given and the positive steps taken by Mr Mattock to ensure there is no repetition of the inappropriate behaviour."

Mr Mattock, who is still working as a locum in Macclesfield, said: "There seemed to be a culture within the department – not just within the department, but with other people in the trust as well – for these images to go around.

"I just did what I saw the people doing. I suppose I wanted to fit in. People had sent me these things so I sent them something back. The numbers seemed to go up as the years progressed. Also there was a lot of text messages that went round the department as well."

He added that his £55,000-a-year career had been "completely blown out of the water by this" and said: "I shouldn't have done it."

Doesn't surprise me, I could tell you a thing or two about the NHS but I'm not allowed to ;)

I can tell you that its extremely hard to be sacked from the NHS, even for something this serious.

They hate looking bad like that and they fear the Union very much, its all best kept quiet so they would have asked him to resign and dangled his final Wage + Holidays owed and Increments rather than tell him they would give him the sack.

It's near impossible to be sacked from the NHS Scotland anyways
